..... diy I would say 1.5 no smaller. I have one on my 180 gallon cichlid aquarium I never have a problem out of it and no lift pump. I used it on my reefs before I drilled. I found that if I used a bigger intake. Like a 2" and reduced it it would cause less of a fluctuation in aquarium water level. If you use a lift pump the valve tends to become clogged quickly so care to keep clean. Mine would suck up a piece of algea or small animal...

Oh and as far as temp 76. My heater turns on at 76 and turns off at 76.5 at 77 my fans kick on and run till 76.5. At 78 my lights start shutting down. But that's never happened.

1 inch might handle 500gph 1.25. Will haldle 750 and 1.5 should haldle 1500 gph.

when i first made mine, i went with an angle inlet and cut pieces of egg-crate to keep out snails. but i like the bigger 2" reducer but you will need to modify it and cut slots to keep snails out.

ok now we are talking about pictures or links to pictures. i was thinking about putting a right angle in the tank. i was also thinking just cutting the pipe on the inside of the tank to a desired height and putting a cap on it with slots cut into it.
