never made it to petco, i did however use google sketch up to kinda get a look at the layout of the sump. i like it but it made me look at skimmers. i looked at the sc150 and the octopus nw150 and then i said to myself "self, im loosing so much area by putting a skimmer in the sump." then i remembered they made back pack skimmers. so i started looking at them on auqacave.

if i where to utilize a hob skimmer i could use almost all of the available area of the 40g breeder for a refugium. minus the tiny part for the return pump.

so now im asking for more advice.

what is a good amount of flow through a refugium? what is too much? what is not enough? i can adj my pump and overflow selection accordingly.

has anyone had any experience with octopus hob skimmers? ive got a couple picked out.

Reef Octopus BH 300F Dual Hang-on-Back Protein Skimmer with Filter System* - AquaCave
Reef Octopus BH 300 Dual Hang on Back Protein Skimmer - AquaCave
Reef Octopus BH 2000 Hang on Back Protein Skimmer by CoralVue - AquaCave

if i go this route i can afford a bit more money to go to the skimmer because once i get it, it can go straight to work vs waiting for the fuge components (in sump skimmer, return pump, overflow box, and plumbing) to be purchased when i can.

ive even contemplated getting something like a 10g for just the skimmer and return pump, then figuring out how to plum the 10 to the 40 to circulate water for the fuge.

IF you plan on running a true refugium to grow pods y, skimmer goes first

yes sir. if i keep the skimmer in the sump i was going to have 3 chambers, pump in the middle and the fuge and the skimmer on the ends over flowing to the middle.

fuge---line teed off from return pump---return pump---in from dt and skimmer.
