Funky tank ???????

I'm cycling my saltwater with a raw shrimp and some LR..... today I noticed the water is getting pretty funky smelling.... I seem to remember something like this with my freshwater not long before it finished....... am I correct in my assumption?????? or do I just have stinky water...

it is the shrimp decomposing and the lr die off

Yeah but the LR was cured.............. I tested the water and there's a large nitrite spike...... next is the nitrate and then done right???????? (of course with a water change etc.)

yep. when both ammonia and nitrite are 0 do your water chane and stock slowly

change ur carbon or charcol if thats how you even spell it it also helps with smell
