Garnet sand

What are the reasons for NOT using sand from a FW tank?
Wouldn't the bacteria die off be a good start for a cycle?

I have some dead coral and some old dried out reef rock I will be putting in to start the tank, and will likely purchase some live rock next month.

The pink purple Garnet sand is pretty and I was interested in using it in the tank. Here it is in the FW 16G when I was changing the scape last year.

It has no heavy metals and only ,5% silica 97% garnet, something like 1% Zircon and~ 1.5% is calcium carbonate, I believe.

Always can just buy a fresh bag and not use the old, but was trying to save $17 I could use. Towards live rock .

Garnet is a silicon gemstone. The fact that they differentiate silica from the garnet, or is the silica 5% of the total, not in addition to the garnet. Adding free silicon to a salt water system might add a serious diatom issue. Diatoms feed on silicon.
Although garnet is relatively hard (6.5-7) it might start to breakdown or oxidize after prolonged saltwater exposure. I say might. I had granite and quartz in my first tank with no diatoms at all. The silica was too tightly bound to be consumed by the diatoms

Oops, that is a typo... it is 1/2% silica, mine had no dust except a little at the bottom of the bag. In the FW I had no diatom outbreak when I started the tank.

So what do you, and anyone else think about using the FW garnet sand in the SW tank?
