If the bag suggests that the entire bag makes 50g and you need 30g you're going to need a little more than 1/2 a bag. With my salt mix (Reef Crystals) I use 1/2c per 1g of water; YMMV

Even without livestock in the tank I'm inclined to do the initial water mix in a new unused garbage can. The tap water will end up in the substrate and start some mean algae in there before it gets sw
mixed all the way through it.

will hold nitrates in the long run unless you stay on top of the cleaning.
