I have a ton of green hair and some black algae growing in my sand and all over my rocks, even my hermit crabs are covered in it. Anything I can do to keep this stuff in check??

The best thing you can do is to first figure out what is fueling it and try to change that. What type of water are you using? Tap, RO?

Other things to consider is, how often are you feeding? Over feeding can cause blooms. Also, the black stuff sounds like cyanobacteria. I just noticed you are running a UV. Is it possible that bulb needs replaced? To help fight the cyano, you might want to add some ph's.

actually my uv isn't working right now. If I get that up and running will that eliminate the problems??

Cindy, you rule!!!

Thanks!

You may change your mind on that. LOL
I don't use one on my reef so I have no onhand experience with them but, I've read that they are supposed to help eliminate harmful bacteria, disease and algae. It may be part of your problem but, without experience to back me on it, I'd be hesitant to say it will solve all your problems.
