Help! I am currently cycling a tank. I added ammonia until it was 2ppm and then added Turbostart 900. Yesterday (day 3), ammonia was at .50pmm and today it is back up at 2ppm. Only items in the tank are rock, new sand, and matrix. I have no idea why the ammonia is going up instead of down.

I would make sure your ammonia test kit is accurate first. Maybe take a water sample to your local fish supplier. Also if the rock is from a previous aquarium, some ammonia can leach out of it. You want to keep your ammonia levels up around 2ppm for the first week anyway to help your bacteria colony grow larger. But don't add any fish until the ammonia is back down and you have nitrates present.
