I have a 29 gallon reef with a HOB filter, I am planning on adding a ~4 gallon fuge in about 2 months. If I got rid of my HOB filter I could add ~4 gallons of a sump as well. Would my tank be ok with the sump and fuge and no filter? Would I need to add a skimmer? Would there be much difference if I just stuck with the filter and saved the money for something else in my tank?

I have a BC29 with no fuge or sump and no skimmer. I just do 5 gallon water changes every weekend and I use phosguard, purigen and chemi pure elite.

I have no issues to report on my now 10 month old tank. Check my album for pics.

It wouldn't hurt but I think if you keep on top of it with the proper maintenance you can save the money for something else.

Just my opinion.
