Have you tried much for chemical filtration? I use Purigen and Chemipure and haven't had any spikes in the Nitrogen cycle.

I am not familiar with either of those things

Perhaps i should look into it... It is something i get from the LFS?

I swear by Purigen. Best part is, it can be regenerated after it is exhausted. Just follow the directions:

Seachem. Purigen

Both are great products and makes you water very clear to. Those and some cheato algae and you should be good.
