A ex co-worker of mine gave me some macro algae. I don't know what kind but it has leaves that look like a trumpet bell. It has really taken off and the nitrates in my tank are stable and never go above 10ppm. I also like the way it looks. Well I talked to him about 6 months later and he said his went sexual and nuked his tank. He lost everything. Should I ditch the macro, or are their warning signs before it turns sexual? Thanks.

Macro algaes will generally start to fade in color (clearish) before they go sexual. It's not a very good idea to keep them in your main display if that's where you have them. The best means of controlling them and preventing sexual reproduction is keep the algae pruned regularly. It's quite important that it not get too top heavy and block the light to the lower regions.

Can you post a pic for a proper ID?

Cheers
Steve
