Making one side of the tank brighter than the other

Has anyone heard of this technique. I read somewhere about making one side of your tank slightly dimmer than the other so that fish or inverts that don't want as much light can feel more comfortable on the slightly darker side & the same for the inhabitants who want the brighter side.

Out of my 4 compact bulbs I have 2 turned on on the right side & only 1 turned on on the left side & there's not a big difference. It's kind of a neat effect.
