I've been reading up on Mangroves and am seriously thinking about putting a couple in my fuge, because my nitrates are a little higher than I like. My phosphates run on the high side too. But I have a question.

Do they have to grow partially above water, or could they be completely submerged? My fuge is a custom job, as tall as my tank and stands right beside it. I keep it covered with a glass lid to keep the snails from getting out (more than they do), but suppose I could open up a flap for it to grow through, but curious to know what to expect for care.

But will they still grow? I found one about 6 inches tall, but it's going to have to grow another foot before it will reach the water level (my fuge is fairly deep). Once it gets taller, I'll remove the glass lid so it can rise above the water.

Is there an alternative you could suggest? TIA

You can always grow it in a regular pot outside and wait for it to grow that extra foot you need. I would try to plant it in some sand /dirt mix and let it grow. Just be sure to water it regularly you can even use your water from your weekly changes to water it to better simulate its environment.

I might be wrong but I don't think it would be a good idea to submerge the whole piece into the water. Try the pot idea that should work.

Use a piece of styrofoam and cut little holes. Float the foam in the refugium and set the mangroves in them, so that they are both exposed to air and have their roots in the water.

Just wondering is collecting the cigar shaped seeds illegal.
Also why remove the salt from the leaves, don't mangroves excrete salt from their leaves?
