We ditched the old sand for fresh sand. Some if the LR was not kept submerged so that may be a factor.

OK. I did another 55 gal change last night. Tested this morning and the nitrates are still off the chart.
I tested the fresh SW i added and there were no nitrates (yellow w/ API test).
I'm at a total loss here. Could there be something in my tank affecting the test results?
I've tested from the DT and the sump at different times with same results.
I will take to an LFS to compare, but any other ideas?

I'm starting to wonder if your test kit is any good. Didj ask the lfs to test it for ya?

I'm going at lunch. They were closed yesterday and I didn't have time to go to another one!
This is so frustrating because I want to start stocking and my corals and inverts are great! I mean really, doesn't it only take 60PPM +/- to kill a shrimp? I have 2 and they are just fine. Molting even.

molting is not necessarily a good sign. it's stress induced at times.
