Moving a tank?

I Ned to move my tank a few inches forward to fit my skimmer in the back. Is it safe to move it full up? Of should I partially empty it. I would move it 6 to 8 inches. I have a 40 g.

I tried with a 30 g and it was hard but possible. Move it very slowly.
