Im confused on what size my reef tank is , it is a flat back hex that measures 60"long 18" wide and 24"tall.

At www.aquariumsource.net they say that it is a 100 gallons.

However at www.myfishtank.com they say a tank with those dimentions is a 125 gallons.

If you use the calculator on this site with these dimetions as a standard tank it says, 112 gallons.

So I would assume it is a 100 gallon tank, I dont know how www.myfishtank.com is squeezing 125 gallons of water into a tank this size.

Any insite on my dilema?

The bold items is the key to your problem.

Given that your tank does not have uniform sides I don't know how one would get a true measure of its capacity aside from what the manufacuter said. The calculators that I have seen and written take into account that all the sides are the same size.

Tank Size

Micheal,

Based on the tank size and geometrical calculations, your tank is exactly 104 gallons. I am going to post again and attach the formula I used to make the calculation...It is really simple... Next Post in t-10

Tank Size

Micheal,

OK, here it is broken own into segments...As you can see in the drawing, I took the massive back section and divided it from the rest of the tank. This equaled 79 gallons, I then split off the angled sections and put them together and got 4 gallons. Then, last but not least, the front section which yielded 21 gallons... I would say definately the other web sites have no idea how many gallons their tanks hold but, if I didn't know the difference, 125 gals for he same size tank would sound great!...It probably is a marketing thing to draw more customers. (cheat)...

Thanks,

Tim

excellent work, Im very Impressed! I bet you could make a pretty good blueprint for a canopy for my tank. Im a quality control inspector so I read blueprints all day.

Thank you

Yippie, Im glad my calculator was CLOSE. The reason it would be off is that the corners in the front are not true given its 'hex' shape.

Timbo2, If you coudl please give me a mathmatical forumla on how to calculate this with Algabraic expressions for the lenghts of the back, sides, front and the angled edges I would love to write a calculator to calculate the capacyt of a "flat back hex".

Sorry but Im not smart enough with math to derive such a formula from your drawing. In fact your drawing was kind of confusing to me :(
