Need advice with Nitrates

Hi All,I'm relatively new to Marine tanks and need some urgent advice on Nirtrate levels and how to get them down. I recently had a outbreak of hair algae which I thought I could scrub away. The algae went away but ever since then I have had seriously high nitrate levels and lost 4 fish. I am at a loss of what to do. I have done water changes but still nothing. I have done some reading on the vodka method, would that help? I have a really small entry level tank.
Please please help before any more of my fish die!
