PS, most folks use a combination of LR and LS for filtration. You mentioned you have 2". You might want to bump that up to 4".

Another source of the nitrates are your tap water. Municipal water has phosphate, nitrate and other chemicals added to preserve the water.. The fluval doesn't help matters either. I used tap water for top off water and noticed that I got an ugly algae problem, and my nitrates were allways high no matter what I did to stop it. No I use RO water exclusively and no worries now...I do not have any external filtration either. Just LR, LS, and a pump..Good luck,,, get the RO/DI quickly..
