Hopefully that jump scared him enough and he will stop it, I have lids but I don't want to use them.

What about using egg crate? Or hardware fabric?

I have heard of egg crate before, what is hardware fabric? He was in an open tank at the Lfs for months so I'm hoping it was just a fluke.
