I currently have a 30 gallon cardiff saltwater tank and love it. My wife and I are piecing together a 55 gallon tank. We' ve bought two marineland 350 filters and are wondering if a protein skimmer is necessary or even required.

I think a protein skimmer is always a good idea it will remove alot of organics that a regular filter will not

You wont need a skimmer in a 55 IF-IF you keep the bio load low, but after a year of weekly water changes of 10-15 gallons you'll wish you had one  I ran my 55 for a year without one and my nitrAtes never went over 5ppm stock list. potters angel, royal gramma 2 O clowns, hippo tang (i know) and yellow watchman goby. Duncans, zoes, mushrooms, kenya, acan. there in a 180 now and i bought a reef octopus skimmer :)
