New to salt water

I am trying to get started in saltwater, I have a 55g tank that I need to build a stand for. While I start the tank build I am going to use a 30g I have as a sump/ref, would I be able to set that up and cycle the water through that to get it established prior to getting the main tank going?

You dont cycle the water. The nitrifying bacteria resides on surfaces like your LR, tank sides and equipment. Very little if any is in the water. Just cycle it all and cure your LR at the same time. BTW welcome to AA.
