Newbee stupid questions

What is a Refugium or a Sump? I have a wetdry system and people are saying that is old school now.

I don't know what I'm doing, help me, Please!

i wouldn't think it to be oldschool. as sump is the resivior of water in the wetdry filter, and a refugium is like a mini tank full of rock, sand, and or algea that harbors a safe place for microorginisms to populate and not be eaten. It also filters the water biologicly
