Definitely not doing coral.are there any frog fish or stone fish that could work in a 30gallon

Cardinals stay mid-tank and would work in a 30g. They school, though, so would really need to get at least 2. There's the pajama cardinal, bangaii cardinals, orange striped cardinal. And they're peaceful too.

You don't need a special filter for SW, but if you're not doing a sump, then you'll want the filter to be rated for twice the size of the tank. And I would recommend canister over HOB filter, but you'll need to be good about cleaning the canister every week to prevent nitrates from rising.
