Had my tank set up for just over a month and suddenly started seeing nitrite,up until now it was reading zero all the time my parameters are:

Temp:-27.1
Specific Gravity: - Just over 1026
Salinity: - 36
PH: - 8.2
Ammonia: 0-
Nitrite:-0.1
Nitrate:-20
Phosphate:-0.25

My tank is a 25 gallon nano with 15 Kg of live rock also live sand.

I have in the tank livestock:-

Thin Striped Hermit Crab x 3 & 1 Red Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab
Peppermint Shrimp
1 x Green porcelain crab & 1 Red porcelain crab
2 x Cerith snail
1 x Blue Yellowtail Damselfish
2 x Turbo Snail (Turbo fluctuosa)
1 x Skunk Cleaner Shrimp (Lysmata Amboinensis)
2 x Common clown (tank bred) very small
2 X Common Clown

Do I need to do anything about the nitite or just hold off the food for a couple of days?

Thanks for any advice

Brendan

I think you're seeing the result of overcrowding and too many fish introduced too quickly. Not sure why you're not seeing ammonia - I'd suspect it's there.

After a tank has cycled (you *did* cycle it, right?) you should only introduce one fish per month. This lets the bacteria population catch up to the new bioload. Five fish in a one-month old tank is going to have water parameters all over the place until things reach a balance.

Also, in my opinion, you're overstocked for a 25g tank, regardless of the size of the fish. I think you should consider returning a few fish before things get really out of control.
