No skimmer

I brought a tank about 8 weeks ago now and it did not had a skimmer. When I asked the guy about getting one he said that I did not need one as the tank was small the skimmer would be small and pointless. My tank is 20 gallon and have not yet had a problem. I have been doing about 1/3 water changes each week. Is this fine as it is or will this cause problems later on?

Nope anything under 40 gallons can be ran skimmerless with routine water changes

I have protein skimmer for my nephews 20 gallon tank and it's a oceanic bio cube fits 14 and 29 gallon tanks
