No Sump + protein skimmer = ??

Hello I was wondering can you run a protein skimmer with out a sump?

I am not running a sump due to room and the wife not liking the idea of plumping so I am running a standard canister filter and would like to run a protein skimmer but I only seem to find "in sump" ones.

any idea?

I bought the AquaC Remora Pro for my 45gal tank. I then decided to go with a 10gal Sump. Now the Remora is in my Sump and working perfectly.
