I am think of getting a larger tank. I have a 45 gal glass aquarium in my attic it is not reef ready though. My question is could i still set the tank up for salt or would i be better off buying a reef ready tank. If i buy a tank i would probably go 90 gal.

It will still work. You could get a HOB overflow and will accomplish the same thing. When I had my 55 I had a sump and had a HOB overflow to get water to it.

As the others mentioned, a hang on tank overflow is all you need....if you are going to use a sump. A sump isn't necessary, but nice to have. You can have a successful tank without one.
