We have a spare 20g tall tank that we are looking to start a FOWLR SW Tank, we have been keeping FW for a few years now. Looking to stay FOWLR for now to keep costs down as we are aggressively saving for our wedding this fall. Looking to do about 20lbs of sand with 20lbs of Live rock or so and maybe just a pair of false clowns with a clean up crew. From talking to friends in the hobby they seem to agree that mechanical filtration really won't be needed on this small of a tank if I keep on top of water changes, I do have a spare Emperor Penguin 280 but it seems its more trouble then its worth to use?

I have refined my parts list (christmas list for the wife/family) to...

1 of the 425's for in the tank

1 600 pro for mixing in a 5 gallon bucket and for easy water changes

50w for heating in the 5 gallon bucket

Salinity Refractometer Hydrometer Refraktometer Ocean | eBay

24"-36" version of this light, will update to a 4x24" T5HO or Reef LED when money allows to transition to a nano reef.

Planning on just getting purified/distilled water from the grocery store for now.

The tank will be viewable from both sides. Attached a pic, view is from our bedroom looking into our office

Anybody have anything to add? They are bugging me for a list so I wanted to get it finalized.

Thanks,
Matt

For nano filtration I had GREAT success with an Aquafuge PS, hob refugium and power skimmer in 1. I bought the eBay version of the large model for $120 which is less than half the retail cost. For a 20 gal you could go with the small or medium size model.

Of course if you are less naive than I was you would forgo the 20 gal setup and accept that you really want a BIG tank. 8D

You'll need liquid test kits for ammo, Trites and Trates. I see a heater for the bucket, do you have one for the tank itself? Also a thermometer. Might want a timer for the light. Otherwise, I think you're set. And welcome the world of SW!!! The next thing we're gonna see from you is a new thread called "starting my 75g reef". Haha It'll happen. :D

Yeah we have a Eheim Jäger 75 watt for the tank, I have the API test kit on my list.

Would love to get a skimmer and reef lighting eventually but trying to get an intro to the SW side without spending too much. After the wedding then yes a reef tank is very plausible. FW bores me anymore.

Have a glass suction cup thermostat and will pickup another timer.
