Is there any reason why someone couldn't use a pond pump for a sump, as long as it has the lift & gallons per hour needed?

Our local Orchard does have pond pumps. They have a Beckett Outdoor pond/Fountain submerged pump (G325AG20) that's rated @325 gph. At 4 ft lift the gph is 218 gph. This almost compares to the Mag Drive MD5 which is rated at 500 gph & at 4 ft lift of 310 gph.

We're trying to find an alternative to having to mail order the Mag drive & wait for it to come in.

Thanks for the comments & opinions!

Assuming the pond pump has been designed to work with saltwater. Some pumps might have metal impellers or a metal shaft. Obviously in a saltwater enviorment this would not be very desirable.

Thanks Aaron!

We didn't think about that part. We'll get one that's actually made for the aquarium. So much for trying to find a cheaper way to go.
