where should my powerhead be aimed to not disturb the sand?

towards the top of the tank against the wall IMO

Put one at each side of the tank, point them towards each other, and if possible angle slightly upwards. This will create a shifting cross current in the center of the tank, and disturb the water's surface for better gas exchange.

Also as your tank ages the sand will be less easy to disturb. When the tanks new the slightest movement will stir up a dust cloud of sand but after a few weeks it will take alot to get a dust cloud and the cloud will settle much faster than in a new tank.
