Protein Skimmer and Powerheads

Hi all,

Newbie here lol, General question, can I use only protein skimmer and powerheads for a saltwater tank setup. Or do i need to add a power filter also? I will be adding a few fish of course and some live rock. I have a 55g tank.

the beauty of saltwater is that its open to several options. if you run a sump/refugium, you wouldn't necessarily need a power filter. (I don't have one on my 125) only thing is you would want to make sure your powerheads are powerful enough to keep the detritus and physical matter suspended in the water column long enough for your skimmer and sump to get it.
