Protien Skimmer, Simple but can work ?

Just wanted to know if it does work for this....

I'm using DSB with LR.. anyway, i have used those mineral drinking bottle...cut away the tip...put inside the tank with wooden air-stone below... to act like how a skimmer works....and bubbles or foam(brownish) do accumulate.

Does the above simple method work like a protien skimmer ???

I've made skimmers out of 2-litre pepsi bottles and wooden airstones. They don't move a lot of water, but they are very efficient because of the massive amounts of fine air bubles injected into them.

A counter current Lee brand skimmer is the same same concept and costs $20.

How do you remove the concentrated DOC (foam) from mixing back with the water?
