I've decided to be responsible and get a quarantine tank. I've got the 75 gallon for my display tank with a 20 gallon sump.

I bought a MarineLand bio wheel filter today and don't like it. It won't fit over the sides of the top of my DT, and there isn't enough room to let it run on the sump, plus the water level isn't too high and it'd be louder than my wife will allow. :) So it is back in the box awaiting it's return.

Then I got to thinking. Why couldn't you just remove the ammonia from the QT via some type of ammonia neutralizer? to basically prevent the cycle from happening while detoxifying the ammonia?

But what I'm planning on doing is getting a sponge filter, any suggestions on where to buy one that isn't $50 that PetSmart sells or a cheap DIY sponge filter?

you could just use normal LR like a normal aquarium and put a power head that you can attach some sort of mechanical filtration
