Question about an overflow

The aquarium that I am looking at getting has an option for a pre-installed overflow. Am I correct in assuming that I would have to purchase a sump filter for this? If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated. I feel like maybe I am going overboard with the overflow with the sump and that I would be better with just the LR and an HOB filter. Looking to put together a 54G FOWLR aquarium for now, possibly a reef way into the future.

Yes a sump is needed. That's where the overflow'd water goes. Skimmer goes down there too. Heater(s). You're not going overboard with the overflow. A much nicer looking tank with no HOB clutter IMO. The bigger plus is you get more water volume with the sump. Can add more natural filtration there also (rocks, rock rubble, macro algae, etc). Good for reef.

How much room ya got? Use the largest sump you can. 20-30 gallons maybe?
