Question on FO tank

I was wondering if I set up a FO tank with CC bed and base rock, would there be a cycle? If so how long? The reason i'm asking is my volitan is getting a little mean towards the other fish big and small.

Thanks,
Rich

There will always be a cycle when dealing with fish. No way around it. Eventually your base rock and CC will be covered with beneficial bacteria that will control your ammonia and nitrite. The typical cycle time takes between 4-6 weeks.

you can seed the new with sand & lr from the established to speed the cycle

Yeah I kinda knew there would be a cycle of some sort, my other tank had uncured LR. I just thought it may cycle in less time due to having base rock versus LR.

Thanks,
Rich

what kind of base rock? if you mean dry base rock, it will not affect the cycle either way...when cycling your waiting for beneficial bacteria to grow enough to counter the ammonia then nitrites in the tank...adding sand or cured lr from established tank speeds this cycle time greatly (as your putting in a population of beneficial bacteria), adding dry base rock is like a new filter out of box - it is not seeded yet and will not help until...

I do recommend base rock though, as a cheap lr alternative with no worries of nasty critters...

Also you have to add amonia for a cycle. Throw in a raw shrimp or even fish food. You will need this ammonia to get the necessary spikes.
