Quick question.....

Is there anyway to make a syphon affect work on my sump to return the water to the tank without using a pump in case power goes out so I don't soak my carpets?

This will work if your sump is above your tank.

Will that mess up the siphon effect from the overflow to the sump?

Yeah you will need a pump at some point, you could pump from your dt to your sump and have the water flow back but at some point you will need to some sort of work or the water won't go anywhere. You could set up a float valve to shut the overflow off if your pump fails.

Usually the siphon in the tank is only a couple of inches below your water line and the sump should have enough space to hold the extra water in it the event of a pump failure. If you have PVC piping you can install a check valve as well, although I haven't found a great check valve though that doesn't have any metal in it.
