What are they? What function do they serve? Ive heard you can filter your water with beneficial algae with them? Any information would be great

Well one great benefit is the water volume increase. Also, you can grow macro algae that will eat up extra nutrients. Also a great place to hide equipment.

Doesn't the macro algae help decrease nitrates?
I'm learning about SW as well

The algae takes up nitrates, some heavy metals, and extra nutrients. It also can be used to grow out a steady copepod population.

Im thinking about building one out of a 10 gallon tank, are there any threads on here for building your own?

Those can be used as food right?

the micro/macro algaes that you can grow in a refugium will thrive on disolved organices other thrive on phosphates and nitrates but in small amounts. there are fauna that will eventually begin to develope that will consume the nitrates, these fauna live in the parts of the system that are low in oxygen, deep in the sand bed.

a refugium is basically a refuge for organisms that can't live in the main display tank do to abusive tank mates or injury. also a refugium can be a place in which you can grow pods that can be used to feed so spieces of fish
