Refugium Question

Will someone give me a basic description of a refugium and the difference between it and a "sump."

I've seen so many models and so many ways to do it!

Thanks

a sump expands your total water volume...end of story
a refugium is an area where macro algae, live food source and other creatures can have a calm existence away from the dangerous of the DT
"refuge"
