Refugium Question

I am going to start on the plumbing and rebuilding the sump/refugium under my 240g this weekend. I am going to use two 18g acrylic tanks (what the guy before me had his mechanical filtration and skimmer in) but I am going to add a 45g acrylic tank as a refugium and have the return pump in there as well (if possible). This might be a stupid question, but would I want the refugium before or after the skimmer or does it really matter? I figured after, but wanted to be sure.

After is the norm. It usually goes skimmer->fuge->return pump.

That's what I thought, but I have seen it the other way around too. Just wanted to be sure and go the best route. Once this thing is up and running, I don't want to have to go back and change things. Thanks!

I'm curious. Are you plumbing the various tanks under DT together or just have returns from all of them? And if so how are you going about this?

Mine is refugium>feed from DT>skimmer>return pump. My feed line from DT is split also one end goes to refugium.

I was originally thinking of doing them all together connected with bulkheads and pipe/tubing, but then was thinking of doing something like the last person mentioned with splitting it into two and one going into the refugium and one into the mechanical (connect those two though) and then both empty into the skimmer/return pump area.

I've never done this before, so I'm hoping to come up with something that will work well.

I don't like the skimmer after the refugium because I don't want to have yet another hurdle(the skimmer) for the pods to have to navigate before they make it up to the DT.

I had not thought about that...so...from DT into 1st 18g tank (mechanical/filter sock or pad...it was a pad, but I think sock would be easier)...into 2nd 18g tank (skimmer and bubble trap)...into 3rd 45g refugium (live rock, caulerpa and chaeto macro algae) and back up with the return pump?

I would put the skimmer in the first compartment with a 7" filter sock. Something you can easily change out.
then refugium, then return with bubble trap. After all that traveling through pvc pipes and tanks, you may not even need the bubble trap.
