Refugium with only two compartments

I will not be running a protein skimmer in the refugium, so would it work with only two compartments? I'll have the water enter in the main section and exit from the second smaller compartment. I want live rock and macro algae in the main compartment. Is sand a necessity, or will bare work?

It will still work with two sections, sand is not necessary but if you have a DBS in your sump with help with filtration

I wouldn't put ANY sand in there. You get more surface area with more LR and NONE of the risks associated with a DSB.

I'm going to agree with Ingy on this point. Skip the substrate in the refugium.
