Nothing but a area/tank with macro algae and a haven for pods and such. Can be done with a huge tank or a HOB filter. They are a good for filtration and a place for pods to flourish with no predators.

*180 gal Display, 100 gal basement sump, 33 gal refugium, 3x250 MH, 2x160 VHO actinics, zoos, some softies, LPS & lots of acros and other SPS.
*100 gal prop tank plumbed into main system w/ 2x96 PC lights and 1x150 MH,

They are also good because the Macro algea that is in them will get rid of excess nutrients that help to fuel bad algeas in your tank.

You can view many of my fish and corals in my photo albums in my profile.

You can also add LR in there for more natural filtration.

Havent read much about HOB refugiums but will post more of a reply when I read the forum rules again

This was an interesting topic for me and Im still learning more about it? I'll try and post a followup after I get it down and try it for myself.
