I bought a 38 gallon tank last weekend. I want to get the cycle going soon. I went to buy a RO water filter yesterday and found out that I cannot afford it at the moment. I'm interested in knowing how vital RO water is. Is there an alternative that will work as well, or by not buying an RO filter am I guarenteeing that my tank will fail? What does everybody else use?

Thanks,
Phil

IMHO the RO water is not vital. If you can afford it, it is better to use that than straight conditioned tap water. However, unless you have really "bad" water (you can order a water quality report from your town that will give you the elemental make up of your water), this will be the last thing you should have to worry about. If you maintain your chemistry right and consistent, that is much more important than using RO water. Good luck

At least yuou should buy distilled bottled water !
It will be much better...
Here in Quebec it's 5.00 for a 5G bottle ...
So 35.00 will do it and it's much better !
