Safe to put shells in tank?

Living as close to the shore as we do, we spent the day at the beach today, and collected a variety of shells: scallops, clams, periwinkles, and nautilus. I know they need to be boiled (is 20 minutes long enough?), but after that, are they safe to put in the tank? I don't want to throw off the calcium or pH of the tank.

Thanks, and have a great holiday weekend everyone

Yes they are safe ... and you are wise to sterilize them first

Depending on the pH of your water, they may break down over time... but a handful of shells should have no appreciable effect on the water parameters.
