Diatoms disappear once they've used up all their resources. Usually you'll see diatoms, then hair algae, and lastly cyano.

How long till you see diatoms without using live sand?

For me, I think the diatoms appeared when the cycle was ending. Somewhere around there. Lasted for a few weeks.
