I am planning on getting oolitic aragonite .25-.5 grain size. I read that this sort of susbstrate has denitrifying properties. My tank is a 20G long.

what depth should I go for? 1" 1.5" 2" ???

Thanks!
Aamir

with sand beds, the more the merrier- i would go with around 2+ inches, to maximize denitrifying capibilites.

In a 20 your would loose too much water volume to try a proper DSB. I would just go with an inch or so and reply on other means to reduce nitrates.

You'd lose half the tank if you went with a DSB

An inch or less is what I'd go with too.
