Sand Debate

Our new 125gal tank has arrived and we are anxious to get it going! We've decided to go with a 3in sand bed (a look we like) but are debating on the best way to add it.
.... Sand before water or water before sand? Does one way clear more quickly or provide any benefit?

...One more question. Does it need a filter during cycling or is just water flow ok? We currently only have one filter and it is still on our 55gal.

A suggestion would be to add the sand and then put a blown up trash bag in there and run the water off of that. It will break the fall of the water. Another way would be to put some plates over the sand and let the water hit the plates. My favorite way is to put the water in and slide the rinsed sand down a piece of PVC to where you want it.
