Is it normal for a sand sifting star to lose it's legs? I've got two - 1 is fine, the other has lost two legs. One of the stumps appears to have another leg growing already (about 1/4 inch right after I noticed the original gone) I have 10 hermits, 3 serpent stars, 2 sand stars, 1 torch coral, 1 clam, 3 horseshoe crabs, 1 clown and 1 dwarf cherub angel in a 75 gallon tank.

Most likely it is reproducing. It drops the leg with a small portion of the body attatched and the body grows a new leg and the leg grows into a new star.
