It really depends on the type of lighting you decide to go with. I use CF lighting and it idoes not affect the electric bill much, maybe a few bucks a month. You do not run your lights 24/7. I have my lights on a timer. Actinics go on at 11 am and off at 11 pm. My 10,000K daylight comes on at noon and off at 10 pm. I also have two 1 watt moonlights (very cool) that I do leave on 24/7. If you use MH lighting I have heard you will notice a bigger change in the electric bill. I have no experience in that area. As far as the stars go, there are several options for reef safe star fish, but there are also several Iwould avoid. CC and the like are very mobile and will park themselves on you corals and munch away. I have a sand sifting star in my tank that is a bottom dweller so I do not have to worry about it toppling my rocks or eating corals. HTH...Lando
