I'm new to sw myself and started out with tap water but quickly changed to RO water which made a big difference for me. Check out ebay for RO/DI or RO units. I see them for about $120

After starting this thread, I did change to R/O water... I haven't updated but since the change, all my corals are open & everything's going great... I've just put up my 55g too... This time I used someone else's water from an established tank... about 50% and the rest RO/DI water... So far I've got about 50 lbs. of live sand from other peoples' tanks and about 70 lbs. of live rock, also from another tank... so the tank went through an instant cycle... This tank was MUCH easier to put up lol.
