You can use distilled water, or RODI, or RO water that is sold in gallon jugs. Some groceries have a filling station that you can bring your own gallon jug to and fill it.

Buying distlled/RO water in gallon jugs for top off and pwc's will equal the cost of buying a RODI unit in about a year.

hey, thanks cmor! I saw a few ro units on ebay, is it ok to get used with a really good cleaning? or would we need to simply save more and buy new? we'll have to continue to do gallon jugs (distilled is what we have been getting--I didn't know it was the same thing) for the time being...car insurance month...I'll probably tell David I want one for my b-day in Sept. ; )

There is not much to an RODI unit other than the filters. If you buy a used one I would want to know why it is being sold. If it doesn't leak then the unit should be good. You should buy all new filters (sediment, charcoal and DI) and then test the unit without the DI cartridge unless it has a DI bypass. You will also need a tds (total disolved solids) meter (about $20 - $30 on eBay). You want to test your tap water tds and then test the RO water coming out of the RO unit. The water coming out of the RO unit should be at 10% or less of what the tap water tested. If it more than that you probably need to buy a new RO filter. The DI filter is the final stage that will reduce the RO water to 0 ppm on the tds meter. When the tds meter starts showing the final water output creeping up to 5ppm or more it is time to change the DI filter.

Distilled water is not the same as RODI. It is a different process, but both methods essentially give you pure water.
