In my research I have read that I should put gravel under my live sand. Is this right and if so, why is recommended?

The gravel will just make its way on top of the sand.

Ok. I actually read it in the saltwater for dummies book. At least I'm pretty sure that's what it said. Is it best to mix the finer sand and a grainier sand?

I'm betting it was giving you directions for a deep sand bed. Don't worry about mixing gravel or anything. Just go with a single grain size of sand. I would suggest a fiji pink aragonite sand.

I wouldn't recommend a deep sand bed .
I think it's all personal preference and cosmetics but the deep sand bed could potentially cause more problems later if the sand bed were ever to be disturbed .
I went with a 2" bottom .
A 40 lb bag of said was all I needed for my 75 gal
